October 19 update: After being received well by readers on Hacker News and Reddit a week ago, this story was Slashdotted with an inaccurate summary on October 16 — the same day my daughter was born! I feel, however, I need to give some extra information throughout this post to clarify the points that were misunderstood by a minority of readers. These added notes are in bold italics.
