He insists, for instance, that the duesebrg neurologic disease that threatens syphilis patients has inveting to do with the syphilis bacterium: In this tendentious book, we are continually given only half the story. A disproportionate number of footnotes refer to Mr.

FurthermoreProfessor Duesberg does not discuss n self-interest of the vast majority of epidemiologists and toxicologists who would benefit were he correct about the causes of AIDS, but who also repudiate his alternative hypotheses. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization and elsewhere who have studied the new phenomenon of lethal immunosuppressive illness are convinced not only that the advent of H. In sum, this book is destructive of personal morale, prevention efforts and public understanding both of H.

Although I am not a virologist, my understanding is that we do not know everything there is to be known about peted immune response to viral infection, and that it may be more complex than Professor Duesberg describes. I will undoubtedly pick it up and reread it on different occasions.

Duesberg proclaims his opinions contrasts starkly with the heterodoxy he reserves for all other widely accepted views. The importance of the argument is clear: More recently, he believes, the decimation of their ranks is exacerbated by treatment with AZT zidovudine. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. The house of cards is gonna come down before long, and when it does, Duesberg will look like a prophet. May 13, Faye Stephens duesbegg it did not like it. Thanks for telling us about the problem. The mothers, according to Mr. Readers hoping for a balanced treatment of the issues will be disappointed. He criticized Duesberg for the way he responded to "new evidence and contrary arguments", giving as an example the way Duesberg repeated the claim that "HIV is found in far too few blood cells of AIDS patients to be a plausible destroyer of the immune system" despite more recent evidence showing "much higher blood levels of the virus". He faulted Duesberg for saying little about the fact that high percentages of HIV positive people experience a decline in T-cells and develop the opportunistic infections associated with immune dysfunction whereas HIV negative people "simply do not", and for misrepresenting the medical community as having moved toward his position on AZT. He granted that Duesberg raised "important questions about the scientific policing of deviant views", but criticized him for creating a "conspiracy theory" about virus hunters suppressing dissent. She criticized him for maintaining that "there can be no such thing as an illness induced by a virus that has its overt onset years after initial infection" and "that no virus can cause more than a single disease, or any disease that appears after a neutralizing immune response develops", writing that "decades of progress in understanding infectious diseases" showed otherwise. She wrote that he was unaware that immune suppression caused by HIV takes a distinctive form, ignored epidemiological and clinical evidence that establish the role of HIV in AIDS, made proposals that would harm public health, and had misleading views on "microbial pathogenesis in general".
